Quicktime is a safe and secure technology and application that comes pre-installed on most Apple laptop and desktop products and receives security updates regularly. In 2016, however, it was announced Apple would no longer provide security updates to the Windows version. The Mac version of the application is regularly updated and receives security updates that keep the program safe and secure. Apple announced in 2016, however, that they would no longer provide security updates for the Windows version of the program, making it potentially unsafe for users, though it can still be used on the platform.

For Apple users, it is pre-installed on Macs and Macbooks on the Macinstosh HD. When downloading from the Apple website, Windows users can choose where the installation file and final application is installed.

The technology and its video player are the default media-player preferences for Apple products, like Mac and Macbook. It is also available for user with the Windows operating system, although the program is no longer updated to maintain the same level of security as the Mac version. Because of this, it was recommended by the U.S Department of Homeland Security that Windows users do not download the application or uninstall if it is already installed.

The player can be installed on Windows computers by visiting the official Apple downloads website. For Mac or Macbook users, the application is already installed on their system and can be found in the Applications folder or by searching for it in Spotlight search.

The latest version of the software includes updates that aim to promote easier sharing and editing for users. In addition, a screen recording function was introduced for the first time in version X, though users are unable to record video if the DVD Player or iTunes content is playing to prevent bootlegging and copyright infringement.

Quicktime supports a variety of different file types, including its own movie format, MOV. It also provides support for MP4, M4V, MPEG-2, AVI, JPEG, and more. Audio formats supported include, but are not limited to, M4A, M4B, M4P, MP3, AIFF and WAV.
